Something urges me to post this song here because people in this country haven't learn anything from the misfortune which happened and this song which was written 32 years ago in the U. S.

Ever since the massive disaster hit the nation on the 11th of March, so many things have come in and out of my mind that I haven't been able to post anything at all.

However, I will just attach the link to YouTube video of this song that Jackson Browne recorded in 1974, and its lyrics (excerpted) with my translation. It doesn't need any comments.

あの甚大な災害がこの国を襲ってから、あまりに多くのことが胸の内を去来し、ブログに何も書けませんでした。

Almost 90 Years Old, But She Keeps Going

On Sunday, 13th March, Ms. Hatsume Sato, who has dedicated herself for more than 50 years to helping hundreds of people, is invited to have a lecture.

She has welcomed people who suffered from social burden or mental illness to her house called "Ischia in the Forest" which is located in the foothill of Mt. Iwaki, Aomori prefecture. There she simply listens to them while serving her genuine dishes and was brought into the spotlight when she and her compassionately prepared Omusubi (rice balls) were featured in the movie, "Gaia Symphony No. 2 (1995)" directed by Jin Tatsumura.

This is going to be a precious opportunity to listen to the 89-years-old quiet activist who has discouraged many from killing themselves.

初女さんは、青森県岩木山麓の「森のイスキア」と名付けられた自身の家を、社会的な重荷や心の病に苦しむ人々に解放してきた。彼らに耳を傾け、心づくしの食事を提供する彼女が注目を浴びたのは、映画「地球交響曲（ガイアシンフォニー）第2番」（1995年・龍村仁監督）に、彼女自身と心を込めて作る「おむすび」が取り上げられた時。

多くの命を自殺から救ってきた89歳の静かな活動家のお話を聞く貴重な機会になる。

The Pianist, Wolves & Bach

Could J. S. Bach possibly predict that one of the indisputable pinnacles of his works, Chaconne in D-minor (from Violin Partita No. 2 BWV 1004/arranged by F. Busoni) would be represented this way with this instrument which wasn't even appreciated in his age?

In my recent favorite album, Hélène Grimaud lets Bach's music capture my soul easily, or it might be Bach's piece that drives her to do so?

You may find the answer in an interview with her as a pianist and also as the co-founder of Wolf Conservation Center, Upstate N. Y.

I got a postcard from my friend today, which reminded me to visit Oahu again, and it also made me think about that well-known Joni Mitchell's song.

However, the reason why I am posting it is that in my country some people think it is a slap-happy kind of song from the way it sounds. So I have attached my translation. For the original lyrics, go to Joni Mitchell's web page.

I have also found on the web that it was recommended by someone as a suitable "happy" song to sing at a wedding party. What a ...!

I wrote 'Big Yellow Taxi' on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart... this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song.（Joni Mitchell)*

Daichi & ken had a pretty good "mini" concert in the lounge of Obihiro Museum of Art, in the "rallentando" darkening blue after dusk embracing the venue. I couldn't even help but staring up at the sky through the windows behind us sometimes while I was playing.

Although I couldn't advertise this event very well, much more people than expected, probably more than 140!, showed up to see us in spite of the congested parking lot and icy road up to the museum.

I would like to thank all of them and those who supported us for this concert.

帯広美術館のラウンジでゆっくりと暮れて行く青い光に包まれながら、Daichi & kenでちょっとしたミニコンサートができた。演奏中にもステージ後ろの窓から外の空へ何度も目をやってしまった。

このイベントの広告は充分できなかったけれど、予想以上に多くの人たち（きっと140名以上）に来ていただいた。いっぱいの駐車場とつるつるの道路にもかかわらず。

お越しのみなさま、そしてイベントを支えてくださった方々に、あらためて感謝。

Eye to Eye with the Whale: Bryant Austin

However, because of my own experience of encountering (and communicating with) wild dolphins in the U. Live Performance at Art Museum

Daichi Yoshino and I have been invited by Hokkaido Obihiro Museum of Art to perform in its entrance hall on Saturday, the 29th of January. This is going to be our first appearance at the local museum which is located on a hill of grand Obihiro Green Park.

We are going to be performing from 4:30 p.m., when twilight blue probably begins to prevail the wooded patio which you can see through the tall floor-to-ceiling windows in the background of our stage. Please look forward to seeing how we fill the quiet venue with our music. No charge for our concert (free!).

Here Comes The Sunshine

I realized the bright sunshine coming in through the windows just when we started playing "Here Comes The Sun," and it was exactly the party coordinator had predicted during our rehearsal.

This is a scene from the party to celebrate my friends' wedding at Rancho El Paso. I believe the newly wed couple has had a great heartwarming time with the flowers, food, costumes, live music, hula dancing, etc., thanks to the sun... NOPE! to all the nice friends (more than 80 people!) who gathered to congratulate them.

"Here Comes The Sunshine" を演奏している時に、温かい日差しが窓から差し込んで来たのに気がついた。パーティの幹事がリハーサル中に予想した通り。

ランチョ・エルパソでの友人の結婚お祝いパーティの1シーン。新婚夫婦は、きれいな花、おいしい食事、仮装（？）、ライブ、フラダンスなどなどでさぞかし満足だったかな。お日様の...いやいや80人以上お祝いに集まってくれたみんなのおかげ。

Great Moments of Inspiration

On a nice and warm Sunday in October, I was invited by my band mate, Claude (Thaddius) to play in his acoustic set with (photo from left to right) Katz a.k.a Fucchie (perc.), Toshi (bass), Chip (perc.) at his base station, Marumigaoka-Onsen.

As always, Claude just named some songs we could probably play together right before the show. I am sure, although we had not rehearsed together, we were able to weave out pretty nice and groovy music. Yes, even with the artists I've met for the first time (Chip and Toshi this time right on the stage), we can always build something great as long as we keep inspiring one another. This is what I believe live music is about!

Cheers, Claude, it's always fun to join you (and for getting the piano tuned).

10月の温かい日曜日、バンド仲間のClaude (Thaddius) に呼ばれて、Katz（フッチー・perc.）、Toshi (bass)、Chip (perc.)と一緒に、彼のホームステージ丸美が丘温泉でアコースティクライブに参加。

いつもどおり、ステージ直前にClaudeがこのメンバーでできそうな曲をチョイス。リハーサルなし。でも、なかなかいいノリだった。お互いに刺激し合っていれば、初対面のアーチスト（ChipとToshiはステージで）とでさえ、いい音楽ができる。これがライブの醍醐味。

Claude、いつも楽しい時間（と調律）をどうもっす。

Let It Snow Again

This is the snowcapped top tube of my bike, worn and battered, but still as reliable as an old friend. We see much more snow here even before Christmas this year. It's time to go mushing!

すり切れてくたびれた、でも旧友のように頼りがいのある自転車のトップチューブに積もる雪。今年はクリスマス前からずいぶん降る。犬ぞりの出番だ。

I am now updating my blog backdating with a lot of topics I have missed to upload in the past half year. I was just too busy....well, no excuse.

I can't even believe that I haven't purchase an iPhone 4 in spite I have been a power user (classic expression!) of Apple Mac for 24 years. It would hopefully help me update my blog more easily.

過去半年間にアップし逃した話題をさかのぼって更新している。忙しかった...言い訳はいかんです。

iPhone 4もまだ買っていない。もう24年もApple Macのパワーユーザー（ちょっと昔の言い方？）なのにもかかわらず...。まあ、（手に入れると）ブログももっと簡単にアップできるようになるんだろうな。

What a Great Time a Cup of Coffee Can Make!

This could be one of the most rich coffee I have ever experienced. I am not a coffee connoisseur or taster, nor do I drink it everyday either, but I could immediately feel that this presents very deep taste and lush and diverse aroma.

I brewed it at home one warm afternoon of October and it could be a perfect match with any relaxing music you name. I would choose this.

I had a kind of noteworthy chance to meet, Mrs. Unnamalai Thiagarajan, the owner of a fully-organic, Biodynamic coffee estate in India, at the local airport. She came to Tokyo to attend a specialty coffee convention and she took this opportunity to visit Biodynamic Farming practitioners and farms in Hokkaido, and we were going to guide her. But unfortunately, she had to turn back on the airplane she flew to here since she had to go back to India ASAP due to unexpected urgency. That was the coffee she left with us.

From her very, very concise presentation (in front of the departure gate!) of her farm in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, we could see that it was carefully grown with no chemicals in the mountainous region blessed with abundant biodiversity, good water and soil. See more details of Balmaadi Estate.

今まで出会った中でもおそらく一番リッチなコーヒーの一つかも知れない。コーヒー鑑定士でもテイスターでも毎日飲む愛飲家でもない私にも、とても味わいが深くて、贅沢で沢山入り交じった香りに包まれるのがすぐに分かる。

10月のあたたかな昼下がりに家で入れてみた。どんなゆったりした音楽にもぴったりかと。私ならこれかな。

地元の空港で、インドで有機農法（バイオダイナミック）の農園を経営するUnnamalai Thiagarajan女史にお会いする機会があった。実は東京でのスペシャルティコーヒーイベントに出席するために来日、ついでに北海道のバイオダイナミック農家を訪ねたいとこの地にいらっしゃったのでご案内する予定だった。しかしながら、急用でインドに帰ることになり、着いたその脚で同じ飛行機に乗って帰られる事に...。上記は彼女のおみやげのコーヒー。

Beaujolais Nouveau 2010

We had another music show at Rancho El Paso's "Beaujolais Nouveau Dinner Special" on Thursday, November 19th.

I was joined by Yohei (guitars/center) as usual and also by the superb guitarist, Yoichi Watanabe (right) and the natural-high vocalist, Ai Tanaka (not shown) both from Minimokudo, as a full acoustic set.

It was a great opportunity to make Minimokudo's debut at the venue showing off the great original songs by Yoichi sung by Ai, whom I joined with Choppa (bassist) in their groovy gig on October 30th at Mega Stone.

Besides, wouldn't it be nice to perform under those ham and sausage and between those cactuses? They are all real ones!

To those who came to the show, thank you all for joining us and I hope you enjoyed the fill variety of music we played.

11/19（木）またまたランチョ・エルパソ「ボージョレー・ヌーヴォー・スペシャル・ディナー」に今年も出演。

フルアコースティックセットで、いつもの洋平（guit./中央）に加えて、ミニモク堂の最高のギタリスト渡辺洋一さん（右）とナチュラルハイのヴォーカリスト田中愛さん（写真なし）も登場。

洋一さんのオリジナル名曲を愛さんが歌って披露するエルパソデビューのよい機会にもなった。ミニモクとは10/30メガストーンでベースのちょっぱさんとグルービーなライブもやりました。

それにしても、ハムやソーセージの下、サボテンにはさまれてライブっていうのもいいかも。全部本物。

お越しいただいたみなさま、最後までおつきあいいただきありがとうございます。なんでもありの選曲で楽しい時間を過ごされたか？と願うところ。

Heat Wave from Africa

I was involved in a live music show by an African music group on the 20th of October at Hokkaido Yell Center as a sound engineer. (I was asked the day before! My Goodness!) It was unexpectedly small but I really had a big time though.

The group was led by Chiaki Hayakawa (vocal) and Masaya Onishi (vo., gt. & perc.) and joined by Norihiko Yamakita (perc.) and Hiromi Kondo (perc.) (photo: from left to right), and (some of them) were on tour all over Japan calling for people's support for the education and independent lives of African children and their monetary fund, "Maisha ya Raha ("happy life" in Swahili)" they built for such purposes. For further information on their endeavor, please check their website.

Their passionate and energetic performance as well as the beautiful slideshow they presented were so impressive that I hoped much more people had known this event earlier. Probably because of the lack of organized advertisement efforts, there wasn't a big turnout of audiences this time unfortunately, but definitely not next time though.

10/20に帯広エールセンターでのアフリカンミュージックのライブに音響のお手伝いをした。（頼まれたのは前日！ぎゃあ〜）予期せず小さなイベントになってしまったけれど、とても楽しかった。

パフォーマーは早川千晶さん（vo.）、大西匡哉（まさや）さん（vo., gt. & perc.）、そして山北のりひこさん（perc.）そして近藤ひろみさん（perc.）の4人。そのうち何人かで日本中をツアーして、アフリカの子供達の教育と自立のための支援を求めて回っている。詳しい活動内容はこちら。

心に残る熱い演奏と美しいスライドショーを目の当たりにして、もっともっとたくさんの人たちがこのイベントのことを早くに知っていたらと思った。おそらく組織的に広告宣伝ができなかったので満員にできなかったのが悔しいが、次はそんな事がないようにと願う。

Great! Finally I have got Jimmy Webb's latest CD "JUST ACROSS THE RIVER," which was produced by Fred Mollin, the same producer as "Ten Easy Pieces (96)," and recorded in Nashville (!) with his live band and whole bunch of prominent artists featured in its tracks.

For example, Billy Joel sings "Wichita Lineman" just as if it had been written by him, while Jackson Browne covers "P. F. Sloan" perfectly with the composer. Needless to say Linda Ronstadt and Glen Campbell prove that they are really meant to sing his songs. And more...

Out of quite a few great American songwriters, "Tunesmith" Jimmy Webb has always been very special for me.

最高! Jimmy Webbの新譜"JUST ACROSS THE RIVER"（セルフカバーアルバム）をやっと入手。プロデューサーは96年の"Ten Easy Pieces"のFred Mollin、そして自分の生バンドを従えて、超豪華なゲストアーチストたちを迎えてナッシュビル録音！

Busking in Downtown

To promote Ben & Konomi's Summer Solstice Eco Festival 2010 for the Organic Movement, 13 artists who are appearing in the festival showed up in downtown Obihiro last Sunday. It was a beautiful sunny day, but if it had not been a sports day for school kids in the area, we could have seen more people walking around though. It was totally not like Shibuya or Yokohama.

I would like to say thanks to all the dedicated musicians who joined together to enjoy performing outdoors.

Participated are: Trevor (vocal, guitar & mandolin), Hiroshi (vocal & guitar), Choppa (ukulele), Charles (accordion), Maud (vocal & accordion), Ai (vocal), Yoichi (guitar), Ako (percussion), Yuma (vocal & flute), Toshimitsu (percussion), Keiichiro (guitar), Maa-kun (percussion) & Shinya (special appearance).

We are going to have a fabulous music festival!

Nice Ride through Forest

Yeah, Monday was a perfect day for riding through "Obihiro's Forest." The bikers & walkers' path is also a perfect shortcut without traffic lights or any other obstructions up to almost halfway to the destination. It normally takes about 15 minutes by car, but it takes me exactly the same by bicycle, then why go by car?

「帯広の森」を走るのにパーフェクトな日和。自転車歩行者遊歩道はもちろん信号も障害もなく、目的地までの半分くらいの地点まで完璧なショートカット。通常クルマで約15分のルートが自転車でも全く同じ。自転車で充分か?

Food Not Being Eaten?

Do you know that in Japan more than 5-million tons of harvested or processed food is disposed of every year? This is the reality in the country of "Mottainai" culture.

I have seen on TV about Second Harvest Japan, and it has also given me a lot of hints about what an NPO can do for the society.

Food is made not so much for financial profit as for humanitarian benefit of all people, I hope.

日本では毎年500万t以上の食品が廃棄されているって知ってますか？でもこれが「もったいない」文化の国の現状。

テレビで「セカンドハーベストジャパン」が紹介されているのを見て、NPOというものが社会のためにできることも考えさせられた。

「食べ物」は経済的な利得のためより、全ての人々が恩恵にあずかるためにあるはずだと願いたい。

Once again, I went biking in Naitai Highland Farm which I introduced in my previous post.

This time I was shot all day by NHK TV crew with a reporter, who for the first time climbed the grand and hilly farmland by bicycle, but she really made it. Quite a girl! I testify it isn't a staged show.

We were expecting the weather to be fine, but the foothill of the Daisetsu Mountain National Park was covered with pretty dense fog (photo).

今度はNHKのクルーに、初めて自転車での登頂？に挑戦するリポーターとともに撮られっぱなしだった。心配をよそに彼女は登頂に成功！なかなかだ。ヤラセではありませんよ。

天気はよくなるはずだったけれど、大雪山の麓は濃霧（写真通り）に包まれてしまった。

Live Music at a Temple in Kushiro

Sunday, the 9th of May may be a memorable day of a kind for my musical career. Daichi and I are going to have a gig at a (Buddhist) temple for the first time.

I heard some young monks of the temple called Myoken-Ji in Kushiro enthusiastically coordinate a pretty good live music show every year in order to offer more opportunities for neighbors and citizens to feel more familiar to the public asset.

Although it will be a show in normally solemn atmosphere, we will be very happy to share a nice and relaxing time with everyone.

"Bikers Paradise" Map #1 To Be Issued!

Ever since I came back to Tokachi, I have been hoping to see more people, locals and tourists, enjoy biking in this area. Although we have pretty long and severe winter here, Tokachi's modestly rolling hills and vast plains surrounded by the amazingly beautiful mountain ridges and horizons stretching in the distance could always be the good reason why I would call it "Bikers Paradise."

Recently I have produced a nice guide map for tourists and local cyclists for the first time on behalf of NPO Slow Wave Sunku Village, a local volunteer group acting for sustainable society and lifestyle.

This map contains quite a lot of items including 3 maps from the one covering downtown Obihiro to the entire Tokachi region, 10 model courses and safety information, etc. If you are interested, please download the high-res preview data (about 10MB) in A3 size (297 x 420 mm), which is separated into 4 pages. 十勝に戻って来てから、ずっともっとたくさんの人たちが自転車に乗ってくれるといいなと思っていました。冬はすこしきびしくて長いけれど、美しい山並みとどこまでも広がる地平線に囲まれたなだらかな起伏と広い平野だけでも、「バイカーズ・パラダイス」（自転車天国）と呼ぶには充分な素地がある（と思っています）。

I felt as if I had played for only 5 minutes even after having performed 5 or 6 songs... just like our music and time had been absorbed into the atmosphere in the venue.

Thanks to all the support of the event staff and the uncompromising conditioning by the sound crew and piano tuner, we were able to present every piece of music deeply and softly without being distracted.

Moreover, it was probably the full house of the audience who breathed in our music most, so all of them remained still in the seat even after we left the stage. Thank you.

We are also very happy to unexpectedly, but successfully perform our second encore we just improvised without rehearsing. I thought we were going to offer some warmth, but it was the audience who made the show with their warm compliments.

No warmth of life, no music.

あけましておめでとうございます。

5、6曲演奏したあとでも、5分くらいしかたっていないと感じた不思議な感覚... なんだか会場の空気に音楽とともに時間も吸い込まれるような...。

スタッフの協力に支えられ、音響クルーと調律師さんの妥協知らずの調整のおかげで、気を散らさずに1曲1曲を深く丁寧に表現できた。

きっと、私たちの演奏を吸い込んでくださったのは満場のお客様。最後の曲が終わっても席を立たずにいてくださった。ありがとうございます。

予期せぬ2度目のアンコールでの全く準備なしの即興も成功。こちらが温かい演奏をしようなんて思っていたけれど、ライブを温かく支えてくださったのはみなさんの方でした。

「いのちのぬくもり」なくして、音楽はあらず。

The Circle will come back to "Great Country Festival" again. Surrounded by those good ol' soft and smooth local country musicians, Broncos and Chuck Wagon, are we really going to rock again? Well, let's see how we groove with a special guest singer, Yuma, who was featured in my previous post.

Club Beaujolais Nouveau 2009

My next gig at Rancho El Paso is featuring an acoustic set with Yohei (guitar) and Yuma (vocal & flute) on Thursday, 19th November for the restaurant's dinner service to celebrate the release of Beaujolais Nouveau 2009. Yohei is a young but awesome guitarist who has been playing with me in many occasions and Yuma is a pretty soulful vocalist who made her debut on this unit in October at the same venue (photo).

We are covering some charming pop/rock classics with the combination of the piano and guitar as well as Yuma's flute for some songs.

No tickets or door charge necessary! Free! I hope you will enjoy our music along with their brand new selection of the French wines and special menu.

Greetings from the Sky

Daichi Yoshino could certainly change the entire atmosphere of a large concert hall, not with the volume of his voice, but probably with its unmistakably spiritual quality. That's why I sometimes feel honored to back him up. Right before this Christmas, on the 23rd of December (national holiday), I am sure you can relax and experience something you haven't at our gig. Mother Forest Gallery

Deep in the forest located on the foothills of Tsurugi Mountain, Shimizu, Hokkaido was an experimental outdoor gallery which was opened by some young Ainu artists who usually live in Tokyo area.

The forest was named "Hapo Ne Tay" which means Mother Forest in Ainu language. The owner, Rumiko Ehara offers her property as a place and opportunity for the young artists who are trying to find their own ways of new artistic expressions based on the long-lasting tradition of the tribe.

Her daugher, Utae Ehara has been producing such events, exchanges, promotions and exhibitions in the metropolitan area as well as in Hokkaido.

Exhibited as Forest Gallery in September were the impressive pieces of work by Shogo Yoshino and Sayo Ogasawara. Shogo creates them with hand-drawn lines to symbolize celestial bodies (photo: "Sun") and animals while Sayo demonstrates unique and colorful illustrations of the gods = animals and traditional Ainu patterns.

In the quiet white birch and larch forest where you can hear the sound of streams and birds echoing, surrounded by their handmade works of art displayed here and there, the entire gallery itself was standing as if it were also a piece of art. I hope my gallery conveys such atmosphere too.

北海道清水町の剣山の麓の森の奥深くに、首都圏に住むアイヌアーチスト達による実験的なアウトドアギャラリーがオープンした。「ハポネタイ」（アイヌ語で「母なる森」）と名付けられた森、代表の惠原るみこさんが、民族の長い伝統を受け継ぎながらも新しい表現を見いだしていこうとする若いアーチストたちに場所と機会を提供している。

惠原さんの娘さん、詩乃（うたえ）さんは、このようなイベントや交流、普及活動、展示会を首都圏や道内でプロデュースして回る。

9月に「二人展」として展示されていたのは、芳野省吾さんと小笠原小夜さんの美しい作品の数々。省吾さんは手描きのラインで天体や動物たちをシンボライズし、小夜さんは神様である動物たちとアイヌの伝統模様を個性的でカラフルに表現する。

せせらぎの音と鳥の声が響く静かな森の中に、人間の手でつくられた作品が点在するギャラリー全体そのものが作品のようだった。そんな雰囲気が私のギャラリーからも伝わるといい。

Celebration Echoing in the Mountains

The view from the outdoor stage which was built in the middle of the bumpy meadows of Saito Farm (see ***) was like a big Sunday picnic of reportedly 700-800 people.
On sunny September 27th, about 20 minutes from central Asahikawa, Hokkaido's second biggest city, deep into its rural area, in the mountains where they say the ancient gods live, gathered the virtuosos of various musical instruments from African drums to Japanese flute from all over Japan for "Celebration of Oneness 2009 in Asahikawa."

The grand finale was performed by (photo 1: from the right) Shunsuke Kimura (Japanese flute & Shamisen, from Saitama), Etsuro Ono (Shamisen, Miyagi), Kosei Yamamoto (saxophones & other wind instruments, Osaka), Esoh (percussion, piano & vocal, Awaji Island) and joined by Daichi (vocal) and me (piano & keyboard), and each of them brought his musical treasure to raise the awareness of life and the planet, all in carefully hand-woven natural costumes which were designed, prepared and dressed by Usaburo Sato, the executive producer of the event.

Then we all get together for our joint session to play the beautiful theme "Ai wo Yoru, Omoi wo Tsumugu ("Twist Thread Of Love To Weave Our Hope" written by Shunsuke K.)" which was sung by Daichi, and also covered my piece "Mother Earth."

That's when Chakkiri (percussion & vocal, Shizuoka: left, photo 2), the incredible improvisor of spontaneity, joined us from the back end of the audience area, singing and drumming on a wireless microphone, who cranked up the jam into a higher ground.

When the session began, the sun fell behind the mountain and the cold dew immediately covered my keyboards and other instruments, but the heat from the united audience kept us playing.

Music is just like the air we breathe. Let the songs go on even after we have left the venue.

齋藤牧場（記事参照）のでこぼこした草地に設営されたステージ上からの眺めは（報告によると）700〜800名の人々が巨大なピクニックをしている日曜日を見ているような感じだった。

北海道第2の都市、旭川市の中心部から20分ほどの、田園地帯の神々が居る（神居）という山の中、いのちの響宴2009 in 旭川のためにアフリカンドラムから和笛の名手まで様々なアーチストが日本全国からやってきた。

フィナーレには、＜写真1右から＞木村俊介（笛・三味線：さいたまから）、小野越郎（三味線：宮城県）、山本公成（サクソフォンおよび他の管楽器：大阪）、慧奏（打楽器、ピアノ、ボーカル：淡路島）に吉野大地と私が演奏。それぞれが命と地球への思いを広げようと、主催者のさとううさぶろう氏がデザインし、準備し、着付けまでしてくれた手織りの自然素材の衣装をまとって、宝物のような音楽を持ち寄った。

最後のジョイントセッションは、吉野大地の歌う美しいテーマソング「あいをよるおもいをつむぐ」（作詞作曲：木村俊介）、そして私の書いた"Mother Earth"。

そこへ、観客席の後ろからワイヤレスマイクで歌いながら太鼓を叩くチャッキリ（吟遊音楽家、パーカッション、ボーカル・写真2左：静岡）が登場して、音楽はめくるめくハイヤーグラウンド（絶頂）へといざなう。

セッションの始まった頃に太陽が山陰に沈み、あっという間に冷たい夜露が鍵盤やその他の楽器に降り注いだが、みんなで観客の熱気に応えて演奏を続けた。

音楽はわたしたちにとって空気のようなもの。会場を立ち去ったあとも響き続けてほしい。

Veggies in Roppongi, Yum!

I visited a new restaurant/bar in Roppongi called "Soul Village STATION - Roppongi Nouen (Garden)" that my friend successfully renovated his entire house into.

Most of the core staff members are the sons and daughters of farmers who live in other places in Japan. Fresh and good veggies they serve are carefully grown by the farmers or the ones my friend or the staff know personally, while other selections of wines, other food and drinks seem to have been chosen in the same fashion. Yum!

Also, the walls, floors and ceilings in the restaurant, bars, entrance and stairways were carefully designed and handmade with natural clay which were brought from some places in the country.

He took me to the bar in the basement, and with his affable and mischievous smile he uncovered his old piano he hid in the wall-cabinet there. I improvised several pieces and hopefully contributed to that organic and comfortable atmosphere.

It was full house even though it was Thursday, and my friend told me it was booked up until October. If interested, give it a call and take a chance...

友人が自宅を改装して六本木に出現した「SoulVillageSTATION 六本木農園」に行ってきた。

主なスタッフはみんな地方の農家の息子や娘たち。出されている新鮮な野菜は、その農家またはオーナーや彼らが直接知っている生産者から仕入れているようだ。そのほかのワインやドリンク、料理も同様のようだ。おいしい。

レストラン、バー、入り口、階段など、全ての壁、床、天井は国内数カ所から運んできた「土」を使って、丁寧に手作りされている。

彼は私をバーに連れて行くと、こっそりと壁の中にしまってあった古いピアノをニコニコしながら出してきた。即興で数曲弾かせていただき、（願わくば）お店のオーガニックで心地よい空気に貢献してきたかも。

木曜というのに満席。10月まで予約でいっぱいとのこと。ご興味の方はダメもとで電話をしてみて。

Down in Shinjuku

Until this weekend I am working and staying at JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) Tokyo International Center near Shinjuku, fortunately on the 10th floor!

It's quite a view, but ironically I have heard Bosozoku (motorcycle gang) roaring up and down the Koshu-Kaido street some 300 meters away.

However, I am pretty happy that I could buy a new super-thin filter for my camera at one of those camera shops in crowded Shinjuku today.

I can hardly find both such an noisy Bosozoku and the same filter in my hometown.

今週末までJICA東京国際センターへ出張滞在中。なんと10階の部屋。

なかなかの眺めだけれど、300 mほど離れた甲州街道で轟音をうならせる暴走族一軍が...。

でも今日は、混雑する新宿の某カメラショップで念願のカメラ用薄型フィルターを手に入れて、とりあえずはよしとしよう。

帯広では、こんなににぎやかな暴走族も同じフィルターもお目にかかれないし。

Wouldn't it be nice to have soothing and relaxing "live" music in the middle of a formal public convention or such an occasion?

We will make it happen. Daichi, who have appeared in this blog several times, and I am going to perform on Thursday, 3rd September from 12:45 to 1:30 at one of the best concert halls in the area for Hokkaido Public Health Convention 2009. (No admission, Free!)

Although I am also running some slideshows while we perform, I recommend that you close your eyes and listen carefully to his voice.

ちょっと堅苦しい「公衆衛生大会」のようなイベントの真ん中に、気持ちがなごむようなゆったりとした音楽が聴けるなんてどうでしょう？

やってみせます。何度かこのブログに登場している吉野大地さんと、9/3（木）地域でも最高のコンサートホールで開催される「第58回北海道公衆衛生大会」の最中、12:45 -1:30に登場しますよ。入場無料ですよ!!

演奏中にスライドショーも流すつもりだけれども、ゆっくりと目を閉じて彼の声に聴き入るのもいいかも。

Hanabi: Fireworks

One of the most extravagant firework festivals in the nation, "Kachimai Hanabi Taikai" is an annual function here. Thanks to my friends who own a house near the less crowded side of the riverbanks, I could relax and enjoy a nice summer evening this year.

But I just wonder why they needed those "laser beam show" and "dance music" in the main stage which was fortunately away from where I was... They probably spoiled the peaceful and quiet evening with the beautiful starry skies above, didn't they? Am I just getting older?

国内でも有数の絢爛豪華な花火大会「勝毎花火大会」は、ここでは年中行事。メインスタンドの反対側の混雑していない河原の近くに家を構える友人のおかげで、今年はゆっくりと夏の宵を楽しめた。

しかしながら、なぜレーザーショーやダンスミュージックをがんがんやっているのかがよく理解できなかった。すでに美しい星空に平和で静かな夕闇があるのに...。年をとっただけかな？

Four-Leaf Clover

Here is my recent discovery of a four-leaf clover in response to my friend's posting. Take a close look and find another one behind it too. I found this in Obihiro-no Mori (Forest) when I was testing my new (second hand) camera last week. Will this be a sign of "double" good luck?

It also reminds me of the front page of "lonely planet" Ireland, country of clovers.

友人のブログ投稿に応えて、私の見つけた「四つ葉のクローバー」もこちらに。先週帯広の森で新しい（中古）カメラをテストしていて見つけたけれど、よく見るともう一つ後ろにありますよ〜。ダブル幸運の前兆だといいけれど。

Something Unusual?

Earlier in August, I visited Saito Farm on the outskirts of Asahikawa, where another music festival called Celebration of Oneness 2009 is going to be held on Sunday, September 27th.

I am very happy to find this farm very peaceful and full of lives. It will surely be great for me to perform music "outdoors" here with a whole bunch of great artists.

Great smile! The owner, Akira Saito has been practicing his own way of sustainable farming style consistently and stubbornly for more than 60 years!

The milk produced here is thick and rich, which instantly reminded me of that good old flavor of Trappist Monastery Butter Candy.

However, there are some things very unusual with the cattle grazing on this farm. Look at this photo!

In Japan, it is hard to find such dairy farms. Have you noticed?

8月初旬、旭川郊外の「斎藤牧場」を訪ねた。ここでも9/27（日）に音楽祭「いのちの響宴2009」が開催されるからだ。

とても平和で生命力にあふれた牧場。こんなところで野外ライブ、それも名だたるアーチストたちと一緒にできるなんてきっとすばらしいに違いない。

この笑顔！牧場主の斎藤晶氏、60年以上もこだわりの（今でいう）持続可能な牧畜スタイルを貫いてきた。

牛乳も一飲みで懐かしいトラピストバター飴の風味を思い出させるほど、濃くてリッチ。

そして、この牛の写真。日本の牧場ではかなり普通じゃない風景。気がつきましたか？

The Circle: Live Cherry Blossoms

There is a nice cherry tree near the venue, Rancho El Paso where we are going to have a gig on this coming Saturday, 25th April, and that's why I titled the show "live cherry blossoms."

"The Circle" is named partly after Marumigaoka Onsen, which can literally mean "Circle Beauty Hill Hot Spring" where Claude, the vocalist of the band lives and works. The five-piece session band is going to cover some of cool rock classics and rock the whole house!

It's been a while since I posted last. Meanwhile I finally got my overused iBook G4 broken so I had to slow down a bit.

Today I am urged to write about something which came to my attention when I was watching TV.

There was an unfortunate crash of a big FedEx freight airplane at Narita Airport yesterday morning. I felt sorry for the two pilots who died (as well as those who had to miss their vacations which were cancelled or affected due to this accident).

However, what I felt awkward today was not it, but the way most, probably all of the Japanese news anchors explicitly pronounced something that sounds like "porpoiz" or "pawpoiz" which was considered to be the cause of the crash. "What???" Yes, it meant "porpoise," which is how the aircraft bounced up and down when landing. I even wonder if those bilingual newscasters felt uncomfortable about it.

Is it just a de-facto-standard pronunciation long established in Japanese aviation personnel's jargon? If so, I suggest that this kind of misunderstanding be reviewed and corrected for this particular purpose since any miscommunication (e.g. between pilots and ground control) caused by such mispronunciation may lead to a serious disaster... before it's too late.

Some may say,"Why fuss so much? How could they change?" But it doesn't make sense to me since no one in Japan calls the popular vocalist "Tortoise Matsumoto" (from a band "Ulfuls") in the same fashion.

しばらくぶりに書きます。とうとう酷使してきたiBook G4がイカレました。少しペースダウンです。

テレビを見ていたらちょっと気になったことがあって、書きたくなりました。

昨日朝の成田空港での不幸なFedEx機の事故。亡くなった二人のパイロットのご冥福を祈るとともに、この事故が原因で休暇が台無しになってしまった人たちも気の毒と思う。

でも、今日気になったのはこのことではない。テレビのアナウンサーたちが、事故原因は「ポーポイズ...」とあからさまに発音していたことだ。なんじゃそりゃ？ああ、"porpoise"（イルカの仲間！発音はスペル通りではなくカタカナなら「ポーパス」）、つまり（イルカのように）航空機が着陸時に上下に跳ねる動きをすることを意味していた。各局のバイリンガルのキャスターたちは気持ち悪くなかったのだろうか？

国内の航空業界用語としてすでに浸透している発音なのだろうか？もしそうだとしたら、特にこの業種のためには、このような誤解は他にもないか早いところ見直して是正した方がいいと思う。なぜなら（たとえば）パイロットと航空管制官間の通信で、このような発音の間違いによるミスコミュニケーションが起きたら、ただでは済まされないことになるかもしれないからだ。手遅れになる前に...。

「そんなに騒ぐなよ」とか「簡単に変えられるわけないよ」という声が聞こえてきそうだが、言い訳にならない。だって、あのウルフルズの人気リードボーカリストを「トートイズ（tortoise: リクガメのこと）松本」って呼ぶ人はいないっすよ...。

Amazing Virtuosi: Dudamel & SBYOV

I was watching NHK-Edu Channel then. Was it just another Tchaikovsky's No. 5? No, it turned out to be the most breathtakingly passionate performance of the work I'd ever heard in my life.
It was a concert in Tokyo Art Theater in December 2008. Wait. Something looks unusual... My goodness! Look at those players in the orchestra... All of them are obviously as young as high school or college students. The Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela is comprised of young musicians of ages from 16 to 20. Amazing!
Being conducted by the genius Venezuelan colleague Gustavo Dudamel, I would say, being one entity with the body and soul of Dudamel, their rendition was full of spirited energy from the New World. The great addition was Mambo! from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story as encore.
I was just trembling with excitement throughout the show in spite of the non HiFi program. Had I been there, I am sure that I would have stood up to send my full ovation.

驚きのヴィルトゥオーゾ：デュダメル & SBYOV
その時、NHK教育を観ていた。あれ、またチャイコフスキーの5番かぁ。いやいや、こりゃ今まで聴いた中で、胸が締めつけられるほど最も情熱的な演奏になってしまった。
2008年12月の東京芸術劇場での公演。なんだか変だぞ。ありゃりゃ？奏者を見てみて。どう考えても高校生か大学生くらいの若者たち。シモン・ボリバル・ユース・オーケストラ・オブ・ベネズエラは、なんと16才から20才までのプレーヤーだけによるオーケストラ。驚き。
そして、同じくベネズエラの天才、グスターボ・デュダメルの指揮により、いや、デュダメルの体と魂と一つの生き物のように一体となって繰り出される演奏は、「新世界」からの情熱あふれるエネルギーがいっぱい。素敵なオマケ？は、バーンスタインのウェストサイドストーリーから「マンボ！」のアンコール。
高音質放送でもないにもかかわらず、興奮して震えが止まらないくらいの演奏会。その場に居たら、間違いなくスタンディング・オベーションを送っていただろう。

"An Inconvenient Truth" (2006) To Be Shown

Yes, I know it's controversial in some ways. In this documentary, there might have been some information which was too dramatized, or probably exaggerated... I don't necessarily believe 100% of what's presented in this film, and I am not an enthusiastic supporter of Al Gore either, but I would say, "So what?" to those who comment nothing but skeptical about this film.
It's because, in comparison, such discrepancies may not matter at least as much as Al Gore's real message, especially if you have read this warning which was issued by the Union of Concerned Scientists in 1992.
I think the film deserves to be seen by many people... not only by those environmentally conscious or conscientious, but also by those who may have a lot of questions about the U.S. and global politics, those wondering why things have gone wrong this far, or those who are interested in how to present and disseminate their ideas effectively, etc.
However, what about our next-and-on generations?...that's what counts. Perhaps some arrogant people have been more powerful than people who really care. Will we change? Is this film the hope for those who would like to see such CHANGE in the near future?
If you haven't seen it, please come see it for only 500 yen (free for 18 years old and under), which however may turn out to be a precious 500 yen.

この映画、ある意味物議を醸しましたね。このドキュメンタリー中のいくつかの情報は、ちょっとドラマチックに演出され、少し大げさに見えることもあったかもしれない。私自身、この中で語られていることを100%信用しているわけでもないし、Al Goreの熱心な支持者でもない。でも、この映画に対して懐疑的な意見しか言わない人たちに対して、あえて「それがどうした？」と言いたい。
なぜなら、そんな食い違いは、アル・ゴアが本当に伝えたかったことと比較すると、少なくともさほど重要なことではないと思うからである。特に、1992年に世界の1700人の科学者たち（UCS憂慮する科学者同盟）が発した共同声明「世界中の科学者からの人類への警告」を読む限りは...。（残念ながら、信じられないことに、日本語訳がウェブ上で見つかりません。文末に書き出しのみを添付しました）
この映画は、環境に対して意識の高く、良心を抱いている人々のみならず、アメリカと世界の政治に疑問を抱く人々、なんでこんなにおかしくなってしまったのだろうと気になる人々、はたまた、自分の考えをいかに効果的に広く伝えるかに興味のある人々など、より多くの人たちに観てもらう価値があるでしょう。
ところで、私たちの子供たち、そしてその先に繋がる世代の将来は？このことが重要でしょう。今までは、おそらく一部の傲慢な人々が、心から気にしている人たちよりも力があったのかもしれない。私たちは変わるのか？この映画は、近い将来のそんなCHANGEへの希望を託したのか？

A Recreation Room?

There is a big recreation room where I started working recently. During today's lunch break, we all went downstairs to play table tennis.
What a shame! Look at the way I stand like an idiot when receiving the opponent's "hyper-rocket" smash. No wonder this was probably my third or fourth ping-pong experience in my life and for the first time in ten years for sure.
The ping-pong table is the only choice now, but I may be seeing a pool table, a pinball machine and a climbing wall, etc. in few months to come. Moreover, a little river kayak will do since the nice Tokachi-gawa riverbank is just a few minutes away on foot.
Can't wait for the spring to come...

最近働き始めたオフィスには、なんとレクリエーション・ルームがある。今日の昼休みに、みんなで卓球をしに階下へ。
なんちゅうカッコして打っているんじゃい。対戦相手？のスーパーロケットスマッシュの標的となっている間抜けな格好の私。人生3、4度目の卓球、ここ10年はラケットを触ったこともない...まあ仕方ない。
卓球台だけではなく、そのうちプールテーブルやピンボール、クライミングウォールなどが設営されるのではないかと期待している。いや、十勝川が歩いて数分のところにあるので、カヤックなんて最高でしょう。
春が待ち遠しい...。

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thank you for waiting patiently to those whom I have already told that I was going to write about Manman. Yes, I've finally got the special article about Emmanuel "Manman" van Ruitenbeek (Van Vliet EBH Elshof) who came from the Netherlands as one of the top competitors in Japan's biggest bicycle stage race, Tour de Hokkaido 2008, uploaded (as The Perspectives Special in the 16th issue of Tokachi Style web magazine).

Although the championship of the entire race was won by a Japanese racer, Takashi Miyazawa (Meitan Hompo-GDR), Manman actually held on to the Green Jersey (only worn by the "present" champion) from the 1st stage to the 3rd one which toured around in Eastern Hokkaido. So when the competitors left Obihiro for the 4th stage, he was the leader.

There might have been some articles about the race itself in general in newspapers and magazines, but this may be among the few which feature one particular racer. So, from his "perspective," you can find quite a lot not only about how he has enjoyed bicycling in his life, but also about our culture, values and environment.

I would like to thank the race organizers, the team management and of course Manman for giving me this great opportunity.

2009年、あけましておめでとうございます。
「マンマン」のインタビュー記事を発行しますよと声をかけたみなさん、大変長らくお待たせしました。日本最大の自転車レース、ツール・ド・北海道2008に参加したトップレーサーの1人のオランダ人レーサー、エマニュエル・マンマン（ニックネーム）・ヴァン・ロイテンビークのスペシャル記事が、とうとうアップされましたよ。（十勝スタイル16号）
レースの総合優勝は宮澤崇史さん（梅丹本舗・GDR）でしたが、道東地方で争われた第1から第3ステージではマンマンがグリーンジャージ（それまででトップの走者が着用）を保持していたため、レース集団が帯広を出発（第4ステージ）した時点ではチャンピオンでした。
レース全体の記事は新聞や雑誌などでも見かけますが、一人のレーサーにスポットを当てたのは少ないかも。自転車ライフについてだけではなく（私たちの）文化や価値観、環境について、彼の目から見ての言葉が聞けます。
レース関係者にチームマネジメントのみなさん、そしてもちろんマンマン、ご協力改めてありがとうございます。

We Still Rock

"Long as I can see the light..." Suddenly Yohei weaves out his own funk with his Fender Stratocaster while Claude lets his soulful explosion fill the atmosphere and Dan cranks it up with his groovy drive on the drum set. We still rock and never stay still.
On the 6th of December, in the second occasion of the Christmas event called "Great Country Festival" at Obihiro's noted country-&-western-style restaurant, Rancho El Paso, we performed some classic rock pieces after two other long-established country & western bands, Chuckwagon from Shintoku and Broncos from Kitami. As "EL PASO BAND," I enjoyed those special moments we shook the ground there not only with our massive sound but also with our rockers' spirits.
I would also like to thank Katz and Tetsu for joining us on percussion and bass respectively.
And more than anything else, I would like to express my appreciation to the audience for their heartily donation to Save The Children, which has accounted as much as 15,000 yen in total in spite of such a short period for collection that evening.

12月6日、地元で有名なカントリースタイルのレストラン、ランチョ・エルパソでの「第2回グレート・カントリー・フェスティバル」で、カントリーバンドとして長いキャリアを持つ新得のチャックワゴンと北見のブロンコスのあとに続いて、懐かしいロックの曲を演奏。ぼくたちは「エルパソバンド」として、地面を揺るがす特別な瞬間を楽しんだ。それは決してマッシブな音だけではなく、自分たちのロック魂がそうさせたのだろう。
パーカッションのKatzそしてベースのTetsuさん、一緒にやってくれてありがとう。
そしてなによりも、ほんのちょっとの短い時間にもかかわらずなんと合計約15,000円もSave The Childrenに寄付してくださった客席のみなさん、感謝感謝です。

The real dedicated AURORA (Northern Lights) "evangelist," Tetsuya Nakagaki is making his appearance in Ginza on Wednesday, 10th December.
Born in Sapporo, he was into celestial photography since his childhood. In 2001 he was first knocked out by the extraordinary beauty of the aurora in New Zealand and ever since he has spent hundreds of days and nights on his own in the far north regions in Canada and Alaska in pursuit of the incredibly diverse and ephemeral views of the heavenly lights.
Since I have supported him by performing music in and organizing his slideshows in my area in several occasions, I bet you will be struck by the hundreds of pictures he is showing. Please note up to only ten people can be admitted for each show. For details (Japanese only)

Thanks Again, Jackson!

It was a rainy holiday evening in Shinjuku when Jackson Browne, whom I have long admired as the greatest singer-songwriter and conscientious activist in America, proved he's still alive! on his first tour in Japan since he last performed solo here in April 2004.

The core of the band includes Mark Goldenberg on guitar, Kevin McCormick on bass and Jeff Young on keyboard, who have all been his musical compatriots quite long time by now, with the new addition of the young and soulful female background vocalists. I made sure that the combination of the piano, Hammond B-3 (organ) on the thick and solid bass lines is my ultimate chill factor.

I wasn't able to hold my tears when he sang the line "...and we remember why we came..." in "The Load-Out - Stay" from his album "Running On Empty (1977)" as encore. It was not just the nostalgia but simply because it reminded me that, had it not been for him singing this, I wouldn't have decided to be a musician.

I had to admit a majority of the audiences were more excited when he sang his classics, but even in his latest album "Time The Conqueror" he still drives on his lane to express what is wrong is wrong about his country along with other songs about love and faith.

As he has done so many times before, he closed the show with:
"And I ain't no democrat
And I ain't no republican
I only know one party
And it is freedom"

I do hope we will see a big "change" soon.

雨降る休日の新宿で4年ぶりの日本公演、長い間私が最高のシンガーソングライターそして良心の活動家として崇めてきたジャクソン・ブラウンは、まだどっこい生きているぜと証明してみせた。
ギターのマーク・ゴールデンバーグ、ベースのケヴィン・マコーミック、キーボードのジェフ・ヤングほか、そろそろ長い付き合いになる同志たちに加え、今回はソウルフルな女性バックコーラスも加わる。やはりピアノとハモンドB-3、そして太くてソリッドなベースラインの組み合わせは最高にゾクゾクさせる。
アンコールの"The Load-Out - Stay"（アルバム"Running On Empty (1978)"から）の"...and we remember why we came...（そしてなぜ私たちがここに来たかを思い出す）"という下りで思わず涙が出てくる。懐かしさだけではない。こう歌う彼の姿がなければ、私はミュージシャンになろうと決心しなかっただろうから。
ほとんどの観客たちは古い歌を歌う彼で盛り上がっていたが、ニューアルバムの"Time The Conqueror（時の征者）"でも彼は、愛や信念の歌に加えて自国の誤ったこともはっきりと描くことを相変わらず貫いている。
以前のライブでもよくあったように、「おれは民主党支持者でも、共和党支持者でもない。1党だけしか知らない。それは「自由」だけ（アイ・アム・ア・パトリオット by Little Steven）」を歌って終了した。
早く大きなCHANGEが訪れることを願う。

Rehearsing with Amazing Voice

If there is anything like "heavenly voice," Daichi Yoshino's must be the one. As soon as I heard the sound of his voice on his album "Voice from the Sky," I was convinced why my friend introduced me to him to get together to rehearse.

It was pretty slow and relaxing today and we played 3 songs from his album and one set of improvisation, etc. I don't know how to express how his voice was swirling and hovering all over on my piano in the studio. Incredible!

As I expected, there's nothing greater than experiencing every single moment when accompanying him singing the song "Tobira" which was originally written by Wong Wing Tsan.

Thank you Daichi, Sammy and Kao for giving me this opportunity and I am looking forward to performing together again for a lot more people in near future.

「へヴンリー・ヴォイス」というものがあるとしたら、吉野大地さんの声がそうであるに違いない。彼のアルバム「空へ〜Voice from the Sky」の声を聴くやいなや、なぜ友人がリハーサルをするために紹介してくれたのかを納得。

リラックスしてスローなスタジオ時間中、そのアルバムから3曲、即興で1曲、その他を合わせてみた。私の弾くピアノの上で渦巻くように浮かぶ彼の声は例えようもない。すごい。

予想通り、アルバム収録の名曲「とびら」（ウォン・ウィン・ツァン氏作曲）を歌う彼に伴奏する一瞬一瞬は、なんとも言えずすばらしかった。

大地さん、Sammy、Kao、こんなにすばらしい機会をありがとう。近いうちに多くの人たちに聴いてもらえるのを楽しみにしています。

Obihiro Symphony Orchestra: Pretty Good!

It was my second time to enjoy this orchestra's performance this year. Such an excellent local orchestra which can hold concerts several times a year should be appreciated more. Especially the rich tone of the strings section is superb.

Featured today were a young conductor H. Matsumoto and an Obihiro-born pianist Yuriko Ito who played Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, as if she had been opening a jewel box on the stage. The orchestra also performed Tchaikovski's Symphony No. 5 in E minor, another Russian standard.

The ticket prices are 1,000 and 2,000 yen. How could you complain?

今年2回目の帯広交響楽団のコンサート。年に数回コンサートを開催できる優秀な地方オーケストラはもっと注目されてもいい。特に弦楽器群のリッチな響きはすばらしい。

今日の曲目は、ラフマニノフのピアノ協奏曲2番、指揮は松本宏康に帯広生まれのピアニスト伊藤夢里子の宝石箱を広げたような表情豊かな演奏。そしてもう一つ、ロシア音楽定番チャイコフスキーの交響曲第5番。

チケットのお値段は1,000円と2,000円。大満足。

Autumn Sky Over Lake Shinonome

About a month ago, I hiked to the beautiful Lake Shinonome after climbing Mt. Hakuun near Lake Shikaribetsu.

The quiet lake is often rated as one of "Hokkaido's 3 Best Hiko (Secluded Lakes)" and is surrounded by the abundant and dense bamboo fields.

The deep blue skies and the fast breeze running over the lake that hisses the bamboo leaves on the other side of the lake seemed like the last call of Autumn. The winter was around the corner.

然別湖の対岸にそびえる白雲山に登頂したついでに、東雲湖にハイキング。北海道三大秘湖に数えられる、ほぼ全周笹原に取り囲まれた静かな湖。

深い青空と湖面を走り抜けて対岸の笹の葉をサラサラと擦る駆け足の風は、去り行く秋の記憶。冬はもうすぐ...。

Four Days in Tokachigawa Onsen

I went to Tokachigawa Onsen (Hot Springs) Tourist Information Center earlier this week to provide a 4-day hospitality business English workshop to the hotel staff in the area. It was an unprecedented trial by the hotel association to raise their levels of the quality in accommodating their increasing English speaking guests/customers. All the students attended the session completely. Their enthusiasm impressed me with their imminent demands for such training. I would like to thank all the people who put together this opportunity and my students as well.
今週は、十勝川温泉観光協会で現地のホテルスタッフ対象の4日間「接客英語セミナー」の講師を務めました。増え続ける外国からのお客さん対応のレベル向上を目的とする初めての試みとのこと。出席率100%の真剣さは、そんな講習の重要さを物語っていました。このセミナーの開催に努力された方々、そして生徒たちに感謝します。

The "Funkiest" Neville Brothers

The most fabulous "Funk Masters" from New Orleans still funk powerfully in their blues-soaked deep pocket grooves in spite of their ages (The oldest Art is 70 years old!). It has been 12 years since they last had a gig in Tokyo. They were just passionate, soulful and groovy like no other bands anywhere in the world just as I saw them then. I was really carried away by the encore, Aaron's solo "Amazing Grace" - it's just more than you can imagine, which was followed by "One Love/People Get Ready" joined by all the other members. (29 October at JCB Hall near Tokyo Dome)
秋風も涼しい東京JCBホール、ご高齢（最年長のArtは70才!）にもかかわらず、ディープなノリで圧倒するニューオリンズ産、史上最高の「ファンク・マスター」が12年ぶりに再来日ライブ。熱くソウルフルでグルービーなところは誰にもまねできないのはその頃と変わらず。アンコールはAaronのソロでAmazing Grace（想像以上）、そして全員でB. Marleyの"One Love"とC. Mayfieldの"People Get Ready"でぶっ飛びました。

"COGGEY" Lalaport Yokohama

This nice little bike shop is located in the patio of a huge shopping mall "Lalaport Yokohama" which recently appeared on one block where there was a big NEC plant I used to pass by on my way to work. Its spacious atmosphere and friendly clerks as well as their selection of items will surely make you feel the fun of biking.
時々通勤路に使っていた緑産業道路のNEC工場跡にいつの間にか登場した、最近よくある巨大ショッピング施設「ららぽーと横浜」。その中庭にあるおしゃれな自転車屋さん。三方ガラス張りの明るい店内の自転車とアイテムの品揃えもなかなか遊び心があり、店員さんも親しみやすく好感あり。お近くの方はどうぞ。

Down in Yokohama

I biked around downtown Yokohama last week to shoot some pictures of those historic buildings.

I hope I will have many pictures like this in my future exhibition.

横浜の中心街を自転車で走り回り、歴史的建造物の写真をいくつか撮って回った。そのうち展示会でこんな作品も含めて紹介できるといい。
